Reviews summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

This historic hotel, renowned for its grand staircase and Victorian charm, offers guests a unique stay steeped in character. Its central location directly adjacent to the train station is consistently highlighted as a major advantage, making it ideal for rail travelers and sightseers eager to explore the city on foot. While many appreciate the hotel's traditional aesthetic, some guests note that the room condition can be quite dated. The hotel is a good fit for couples seeking a romantic getaway and families who can utilize the often spacious rooms. To ensure a smooth experience, it is advisable to confirm the lift status upon arrival and clarify breakfast inclusions during booking.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel's facilities receive mixed feedback, largely influenced by the age of the building. A recurring concern is the lift, which is frequently reported as being out of order or exceptionally slow, often necessitating guests to use the stairs, especially with heavy luggage. While some find the grand staircase a charming alternative, this can be an inconvenience for others. In-room amenities generally include coffee and tea facilities, an iron, and a hairdryer, with some rooms also providing a pedestal fan for comfort. Wi-Fi is available, though its reliability can vary by room. The lobby and reception area are widely praised for their beautiful, historic ambiance, though some guests have noted issues with cleanliness or unpleasant odors in these public spaces.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Feedback on cleanliness and room comfort is quite varied. Many guests describe their rooms as clean and well-maintained, appreciating the comfortable beds and spacious rooms that some accommodations offer. However, a significant number of reviews highlight that the dated decor and room condition are in need of a substantial update, with mentions of peeling paint, worn furnishings, and general signs of age. The bathroom facilities often draw criticism for being old-fashioned, having inconsistent water pressure, or showing signs of rust and mold. Noise levels can be an issue, particularly from the nearby train station, street traffic, and due to thin walls between rooms, which can impact a peaceful night's sleep for some.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel's dining options, particularly breakfast, elicit a wide range of opinions. Many guests praise the breakfast for its variety and quality, often served in a grand ballroom setting. However, there is frequent confusion and dissatisfaction regarding the continental breakfast being the standard inclusion, with an additional charge for a cooked breakfast option, which many guests feel is not clearly communicated. The restaurant, often referred to as Ash Restaurant, receives mixed reviews for its food quality and service; some find the meals delicious and well-prepared, while others describe them as overpriced or mediocre. The bar food is generally considered acceptable but also noted for being on the pricier side.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel's location is overwhelmingly praised as its strongest asset. Situated directly next to the train station and within easy walking distance of the city centre and bus station, it offers unparalleled convenience for travelers. This central location provides immediate access to shops, restaurants, and local attractions. However, parking is a significant point of contention. The hotel has very limited on-site parking, often leading guests to use nearby multi-storey car parks, which can be expensive and inconvenient, especially with luggage. While the hotel's central position is a major draw, the challenges with parking and occasional accessibility issues due to the lift's unreliability are noted drawbacks.

Staff & Service
Guest experiences with staff and service are notably inconsistent. Many visitors commend the friendly staff and helpful service, highlighting their politeness and willingness to assist, particularly during the check-in process and with luggage assistance. Some reviews specifically praise individual staff members for going above and beyond. Conversely, a considerable number of guests report encountering staff who were perceived as disinterested, unhelpful, or even rude, leading to frustrating interactions. Issues with housekeeping not servicing rooms daily or a lack of clear communication regarding hotel policies also contribute to varied service perceptions, indicating a need for more consistent staff attentiveness across the board.

Additional Information
The hotel maintains a pet-friendly policy, which is a significant advantage for guests traveling with animals. As a historic building, it possesses a unique character that appeals to those who appreciate traditional architecture and a sense of the past. However, this age also contributes to some building maintenance concerns beyond individual room decor, such as occasional water leaks or general wear in common areas. Guests have also reported various noise disturbances from outside the hotel, including train engines, street activity, and even fire alarms, which can impact sleep quality. Furthermore, some guests found the room servicing policy unclear, expecting daily cleaning that was not provided without specific requests.
