About Hotel Skansen

The fortress is from the early 17th century and was then called "Kråkeskärs Skans". It probably played an important part at the time of the Danish invasion 1611. Around 1700 a district-courthouse was constructed inside the fortress. The buildings you see today were built 1811, and while they originally served as a courthouse, they have since 1901 been a hotel. We will do our very best to make your stay comfortable and joyful. Hotel Skansen have 79 rooms - 24 double rooms in “Tingshuset” including 6 suites with Jacuzzi, and 55 rooms in the main building, where 36 of them are brand new.All rooms with satellite TV and telephone. A modern hotel with a personal atmosphere and old charm. Family owned and managed. The restaurant dining rooms can accommodate up to 500 persons and there is a beautiful summer veranda. Spa: in “Tingshuset” you find a relaxation area with indoor pool, Jacuzzi and sauna. This hotel is a memorable destination, particularly for its world-record whisky collection and exceptional spa facilities, including a highly praised heated outdoor pool that can be enjoyed even in winter. It's an ideal choice for couples seeking a relaxing retreat, families who appreciate a spa that welcomes children, and whisky enthusiasts eager to explore its vast selection. Guests consistently highlight the hotel's excellent dining, the generally friendly and accommodating staff, and the overall comfortable accommodations. The hotel's pet-friendly policy also makes it a top pick for dog owners, providing specific amenities for furry companions. To ensure a peaceful stay, consider requesting a room away from high-traffic areas like the kitchen or elevators, and don't miss the opportunity to experience a whisky tasting for a truly unique highlight.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel offers a range of appealing facilities and amenities designed for relaxation and enjoyment. The spa area is a significant draw, featuring both an indoor pool and a highly praised heated outdoor pool that guests enjoy even during colder months. While many find the spa to be a pleasant and relaxing space with a sauna and hot tub, some guests note that it feels smaller than expected and could benefit from an update, with occasional comments about cleanliness or unstocked towels. The hotel also boasts a renowned whisky bar, celebrated for its extensive collection and knowledgeable staff, providing a unique experience for enthusiasts. For active guests, there is convenient access to a nearby fitness center. Additionally, EV charging stations are available on-site, though some reviews indicate they can sometimes be out of order.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests generally commend the hotel's cleanliness, noting that rooms are typically fresh and well-maintained upon arrival. Most reviews highlight the presence of comfortable beds, contributing to a restful stay, though a notable number of guests found the beds to be quite hard. Room sizes vary, with some standard rooms described as small, while suites are often praised for being spacious rooms and well-appointed, sometimes featuring private jacuzzis. However, noise levels can be an issue for some, with reports of sounds from adjacent rooms, the kitchen, or elevators disturbing sleep. Some bathrooms are noted as outdated bathrooms and in need of renovation. A recurring concern, especially during warmer periods, is the absence of air conditioning in certain rooms, leading to discomfort.

Dining & Food Quality
The hotel's dining experience consistently receives high praise from guests. The breakfast buffet is widely regarded as excellent, offering a varied and fresh selection, including appreciated gluten-free options and delicious sourdough bread. While most guests enjoy the breakfast, some minor points include occasional issues with juice quality or cold coffee, and a few reports of crowded conditions. The dinner at the hotel's restaurant is frequently described as fantastic, with guests commending the high food quality, delicious dishes, and a well-curated wine list. Specific menu items like lobster soup and plank steak are often highlighted. The whisky bar is a significant draw, celebrated for its world-record collection and the expertise of its staff, providing a unique and enjoyable restaurant atmosphere for patrons.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts an excellent central location, making it a highly convenient base for exploring the surrounding area. Guests consistently appreciate its close proximity to the picturesque harbor, the inviting beach, and various local shops, allowing for easy access to amenities and recreational activities. It serves as an ideal starting point for day trips and longer excursions across Öland and to the nearby city of Kalmar, enhancing the overall travel experience. Parking facilities are generally abundant and free, which is a significant advantage for guests traveling by car, though a few have noted issues with bird droppings on vehicles in certain spots. Despite its accessibility to local points of interest, the hotel's immediate setting is described as quiet and peaceful, contributing to a relaxing stay.

Staff & Service
The hotel's staff and service generally receive high praise from guests. Many commend the friendly staff for their helpful and accommodating demeanor, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. The quick check-in process is frequently highlighted, ensuring a smooth start to the stay. Guests often note the attentive service provided by most team members, and the hotel is recognized for its professionalism in addressing guest concerns, including offering compensation for unsatisfactory experiences. However, some reviews mention isolated instances of unmotivated or confused staff, particularly in the dining areas or spa, leading to slower service or a perception of being overlooked. There were also a few comments about housekeeping staff entering rooms without sufficient prior warning.

Additional Information
The hotel offers several notable features that enhance the guest experience beyond the main categories. Its highly praised pet-friendly policy stands out, with the hotel providing specific amenities like water bowls, treats, and blankets for canine companions, and allowing dogs in certain dining areas. For environmentally conscious travelers, EV charging stations are available, though guests should be aware that they have occasionally been reported as out of order. Guests also benefit from complimentary gym access to a nearby fitness center, a convenient amenity for maintaining routines. While the hotel maintains a charming, traditional ambiance, some areas are noted as feeling dated, and its design includes numerous stairs, which could present mobility challenges for some guests. The hotel also hosts various special events, such as Christmas buffets and New Year's celebrations.
