O7 Colombo

One of the most famous of the palaeolithic painted caves in the Dordogne. A fairly recent discovery (1950s) it has some unique paintings and engravings, including a reindeer frieze and a final chamber whose ceiling is covered in depictions of all kinds of animals. Some of the works date back 13 000 years. The prehistoric sites and painted caves of the Vézère valley are now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Facilities include a gift shop, picnic area and prehistoric library. The hours of operation (extended during July and August) and tariffs are available at the website. It is one of the few caves accessible to people with disabilities, as the visit is by electric train.
