Nomads Fat Camel is a backpackers hostel in Auckland’s Central Business District within a ten-minute walk from the popular Vector Arena. The hostel offers a range of private rooms and dormitories which can accommodate up to eight people and each come with access to a shared bathroom. In addition there is also a communal TV area, twenty-four hour check in and free luggage storage. Wi-Fi is available at an extra cost. There are eight well-equipped kitchens for self-catering guests as well as a lively bar offering a light meal every night. Located in the heart of the city, Nomads Fat Camel is only a few minutes from the Skytower and the Viaduct Habour, home to the New Zealand Maritime Museum. Slightly further afield is Victoria Park Market where guests will find arts and crafts shops, stylish bars and restaurants.
Guests feel that this is a great location, with easy access to the airport as well as the Central Business District of Auckland. Being close to the port it also allows you the option to use the ferry terminal to nearby islands.
The staff are friendly and help to create a relaxed atmosphere. They are happy to help their guests with issues like luggage storage.
Guests like the extra touch of being able to have a light meal included in the price of the room every day. For an extra few dollars you can upgrade to a full size meal and several guests have found the bar to be a great place to hang out.
The mattresses appear to be too thin for most people's liking and the lack of ventilation in the rooms can make a night here very stuffy. The hostel is above a bar and the rooms lack soundproofing which again can make it difficult to get to sleep.
The main issue in this hostel is the cleanliness or lack of it. Many guests have complained that the bathrooms have mould in them and that the rooms feel damp and smelly. The common areas and kitchen also leave something to be desired for many previous guests.
The Wi-Fi access here comes at an extra cost which most people feel does not offer a good deal. Many of those who have opted to pay for it have found the connection to be very slow.
