About Ersta Hotell & Konferens

Hotel rooms in historic surroundings on popular Södermalm in Stockholm. With views over Gamla Stan, Skeppsholmen, Djurgården and Stockholm’s inlet, our historical buildings are right on the edge of the lively SOFO area of Södermalm. We have 38 hotel rooms, with four room categories. Everything from the simplest standard with shared WC and shower to large, modern rooms. The hotel is located on top of the Erstaklippan, and is a calm oasis in the otherwise hectic whirl of Södermalm. When you pass the gate to Erstagatan 1, you are greeted by historical buildings, patios, views over Stockholm, a leafy park and much more besides. To honour our history and the many tales the site can tell, we have chosen to give our hotel categories names from the world of diaconia. Stay in historical surroundings with contemporary comforts Stora diakonisshuset (the main diaconia building) was completed in 1896. At that time, deaconesses and students lived and worked in the building. The former residential rooms are now used as hotel rooms, and our guests are fascinated by the feeling of going back in time yet being surrounded by modern comforts. Guests who choose to stay in a Sister room or Manager room stay in Stora diakonisshuset. Comfortable beds and peace. Our Alumni rooms are located in Martahuset, a newer extension of Stora diakonisshuset. The Alumni rooms don't have the same view as our other rooms, but have other advantages. They are located in a separate, quiet part of the building, are larger and a little cheaper. The beds in the single rooms are extra wide (120 cm). Extra-large rooms with contemporary Nordic décor. The director rooms are large, spacious and modern with contemporary décor. They are located in the most recent extension of the hotel and can be reached either by passing through the conference facility or via a separate entrance from the courtyard. These are the perfect rooms for anyone who wants a little extra luxury in terms of space, comfort, Nordic-inspired interiors and peace and quiet. All of the rooms have beautiful views, either over the rooftops of Södermalm or over the church park and Stockholm's inlet. Shared reception, lobby and breakfast room, separate lounge on every floor. Our hotel rooms are spread over several buildings, and to create a more intimate feeling we have created smaller lounges adjacent to each room category. On three of the floors there are also simple kitchenettes with a fridge and microwave oven. The reception and lobby are located on the ground floor in Stora diakonisshuset. Here you will find a sofa and TV area if you are looking for company. And if you don't have your own computer, there is one here that you can borrow. We have free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and in all of our hotel rooms. Breakfast is served every day on the first floor in Stora diakonisshuset. The breakfast room on the conference floor has a high ceiling and its own terrace, which is very popular on warm days. Most of the products in the breakfast buffet are either organic or ecolabelled and local. For example, all of our bread comes from a local bakery.

Review summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

The hotel's historic charm and stunning panoramic views over Stockholm, particularly from its elevated position on Södermalm, make it a truly memorable destination. Guests consistently highlight the exceptional breakfast, the overall cleanliness, and the friendly, helpful staff. The hotel offers a unique, peaceful atmosphere, distinct from a typical chain hotel, appealing to those seeking a tranquil retreat. Its location, while quiet, provides convenient access to the city's attractions. It is an ideal fit for sightseers and couples looking for a romantic getaway, as well as seniors appreciating its comfortable amenities and proximity to the ferry terminal. Business travelers also find it suitable due to its conference facilities and quiet environment. To enhance your stay, guests recommend checking for any ongoing construction updates in the vicinity and familiarizing yourself with the hotel's unique layout upon arrival, especially if checking in late.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel offers a range of practical amenities, contributing to a comfortable stay. Many guests appreciate the convenience of a shared kitchenette available on each floor, equipped with a refrigerator and basic kitchenware, allowing for light meal preparation. The property also features inviting outdoor terraces and a viewing platform that provide breathtaking city vistas, perfect for relaxation. While some guests experienced issues with Wi-Fi connectivity, describing it as unreliable or slow, others found it sufficient. For rooms without private facilities, shared bathrooms and WCs are available and are consistently noted for their cleanliness and sufficient number. The hotel also functions as a conference center, hosting various events, which some guests noted can lead to a busy atmosphere at times.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests frequently commend the hotel for its high standards of cleanliness, describing rooms as spotless and well-maintained. The beds are widely praised for being comfortable, often featuring quality linens and a choice of pillows, ensuring a restful night's sleep. Room sizes vary, with many guests enjoying spacious rooms, though some found twin rooms to be on the smaller side. While most guests experienced a quiet environment conducive to sleep, some reported street noise or disturbances from nearby construction work, particularly in rooms facing the street or building sites. Bathrooms are generally clean, with some being modern and offering good shower pressure and hot water, though a few older bathrooms were noted for being outdated or having issues like slippery floors or minor black mold. Basic toiletries are provided, but some guests wished for more comprehensive options like shampoo and conditioner.

Dining & Food Quality
The breakfast at the hotel receives overwhelmingly positive feedback, often described as fantastic, excellent, and a highlight of the stay. Guests appreciate the wide variety of options available, catering to diverse tastes and dietary needs, including clear gluten-free and vegan alternatives. The buffet typically features an impressive spread of both sweet and savory items, such as various breads, cold meats, cheeses, fruits, cereals, and scrambled eggs. Many commend the quality of the ingredients and the overall presentation. While some guests noted that hot dishes could have more variety or that certain items like boiled eggs were not always available or were overcooked, and that the juice could be watery, the overall consensus is that the breakfast is comprehensive and satisfying. The breakfast room itself is often described as having a lovely atmosphere, though some found the serving area to be cramped with limited seating, especially during peak times.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts an excellent and unique location on Södermalm, offering a tranquil setting while remaining highly accessible to Stockholm's main attractions. Its elevated position provides stunning views over the city and the water, particularly appealing to sightseers. Guests find it conveniently close to the Viking Line ferry terminal, making it an ideal choice for those traveling by ferry. The Old Town (Gamla Stan) is within a pleasant 15-20 minute walk, and public transportation, including bus stops and the Slussen metro station, are easily reachable, providing quick connections to the city center. While the immediate area is quiet, there are numerous restaurants and a supermarket within walking distance. Some guests noted that reaching the hotel involves an uphill walk from certain transit points. Parking is available, though it is often described as expensive and can be challenging to find, with some guests resorting to paid street parking.

Staff & Service
The hotel staff consistently receives high praise for their friendliness, helpfulness, and attentiveness. Guests frequently highlight their willingness to go above and beyond, providing excellent customer service, assisting with inquiries, and offering local advice. The check-in process is generally described as easy and efficient, with the hotel offering flexible options for late arrivals and early check-ins, often with clear self-check-in instructions. Staff are also commended for their responsiveness to guest requests, such as providing an electric heater when a room was cold. Many guests appreciate the option to store luggage both before check-in and after check-out. While most interactions are positive, a few guests noted that reception staff might not always be readily available, and there were isolated instances of cleaning staff forgetting to lock rooms or staff speaking loudly on speakerphone, but these appear to be exceptions to the generally high standard of service.

Additional Information
The hotel is housed within a historic building that was formerly a hospital and is part of a larger church charity complex, giving it a unique, institutional yet peaceful ambiance. This distinct character means it may not feel like a conventional hotel, with some guests finding the layout confusing due to multiple buildings and locked glass doors. It also functions as a conference center, which can lead to a busier atmosphere. Guests should be aware that the reception has limited operating hours, and there might not be 24-hour staff availability, which could impact immediate assistance. The hotel offers luggage storage and has a self-check-in option for late arrivals. Some guests noted that cleaning staff might start early, potentially before check-out time.
