The Duke of Gordon Hotel reportedly enjoyed a convenient location in a stunning setting within Scotland's majestic Cairngorms National Park, a paradise of unspoilt, wild and rugged landscapes perfect for skiing, rock-climbing and walking. Guests liked being within easy walking distance of amenities, shops and dining options plus Kingussie railway station. Drivers welcomed the free parking and said they liked being within driving distance of Inverness, Fort William and Perth as the hotel was just off the A9 and a short drive from the A95 and A86. Famous Speyside whisky distilleries, area attractions, golf courses and museums were also within easy driving distance.

The rooms at this revamped 18th century former coaching inn once visited by Queen Victoria were often described as comfortable and spacious. Guests also loved the scenic views from many rooms.

As the hotel proved popular with large groups, some independent travellers felt they were treated as an afterthought from time to time. Several claimed the food sometimes suffered as a result.

There were occasional claims some of the bathrooms could have been more comprehensively cleaned. Dated decor, aging carpets and tired-looking furniture were among the minor maintenance issues noted by some critics.
